The latest Toyota Verso could not have arrived at a more opportune time. It was delivered to my doorstep a day before departing on a bass-fishing trip to the Middelburg/Belfast area.

Up to the Sixties, products made in Japan were mostly of inferior quality. How things have changed since then! The Japanese – proud, disciplined, hardworking and committed – showed the western world how it should be done. Nowadays you can buy any made-in-Japan product blindfolded, safe in the knowledge that it will be a quality item.

  Audi A6 3.0T FSI quattro S-tronic.

I became the proud owner of a pre-used 1989 Audi 500 SE in 1995. It was a beauty. Long and sleek, it sat on four pathetic-looking Marie Biscuitlike wheels. It was roomy and under the bonnet was a fivecylinder

Jaguar XJ.

Negative perceptions are a man’s worst friend. Take Jaguar as an example. Many of the older bearers of the name looked great, handled exceptionally well and offered ride quality that few, if any, of its competitors could match. However, poor finish and unreliability led to bad trade-in prices, resulting in dismal sales of new Jaguars.

Mazda 5.

Are you also of the opinion that a compact, multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) is meant to be a mom's taxi? I must admit, I used to be. Then I got to lay my hands on Mazda's new 5 and what a surprise. It is a vehicle for all seasons, offering bags of practicality, versatility and pure motoring enjoyment at a reasonable price.
