A vote consisting of the full members and a jury made up of 30 selected members of the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ) have chosen the ten finalists to partake in the 2012 WesBank/SAGMJ Car of the Year competition to compete for honours in the country’s premier motoring event. The announcement of the finalist list was made on 6 October 2011 in the highlight of the opening day at the Johannesburg International Motor Show at Nasrec.

The semi-finalists for the 2012 WesBank/South African Guild of Motoring Journalist’s Car of the Year competition have been announced. The massive field that saw over 320 new model derivatives bidding for a place, has been whittled down to only 26 hopefuls by the members of the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ), who cast their votes from the pool of vehicles introduced between 1 October 2010 and 31 August 2011.

Christiaan Otto and Marius Welgemoed made it two in the row when they were crowned as the 2011 Spirit of Africa champions in Bilene, Mozambique. The pair previously won the 2010 competition at the finals held in Namibia.

A most significant historic photographic overview of South African culture and lifestyle from the 1950's to the present has been compiled and will be open to the public at the Ann Bryant Art Museum from Thursday 14 July to 28 August 2011. The South African Photography 1950 – 2010 exhibition, comprising mostly black-and-white photographs, gives an insight into South African society, politics, culture and the economy, as well as the struggle for survival in the big cities. It shows the way South Africa has evolved into the modern nation it is today. The exhibition is presented by Mercedes-Benz South Africa.
